Easter Monday, April 24th, 1916, saw Pádraig Pearse proclaim the Irish Republic outside the GPO in Dublin.

 

The most momentous rebellion outside of Dublin took place in the West, in county Galway. This adventure uncovers a variety of unique and lesser known stories from a local perspective.

 

The tour is deeply personal, as it is led by a guide whose own grandfather, James Ward, was a Galway Volunteer. It focuses on the national event and key locations which carry great significance. It is a half-day exploration that highlights action during Easter Week in Galway.

Killeeneen

The starting point of the 1916 Rising in Galway.

 

Clarinbridge

Place of initial military engagement of the Rising in Galway.

 

Oranmore

Captain of the Oranmore Volunteers, led an attack on the Oranmore RIC barracks.

 

Carnmore Cross

Location of the only fatal casualty of the 1916 Rising in Galway.

 

Model Farm, Athenry

Was once occupied by approximately 500 Volunteers.

 

Moyode Castle

Persse estate, owned by Lady Ardilaun.

 

Limepark House

Here, a decision to disband was made and ended the 1916 Rising in County Galway.
